Paint Protection Film San Diego: Clear Bra Coverage From Bumper to Full Body

Wondering whether clear film is worth it before the first rock chip lands? That is the right time to ask, because film cannot undo a chip that is already there. Rennen Auto Styling installs paint protection film in San Diego, also sold under the older name clear bra, at the Spectrum Lane shop in 92121.

Coverage starts at a $700 front bumper and runs to full-body film at $5,500 to $8,500. Clear bra San Diego pricing is published by tier below, so the number you read is the number quoted with your car in front of us.

What Paint Protection Film Actually Does

Paint protection film is a transparent urethane layer bonded to your factory paint. It absorbs the rock chips, road grit, and parking lot edge damage that would otherwise hit the clear coat.

The film is a wear item. The paint is not. A chipped bumper cover means a repaint blended into the fenders for color match. A chipped section of film means a section of film.

Optically clear urethane does not change color or gloss underneath, which separates it from a vinyl wrap. Rennen installs paint protection film in San Diego at the Spectrum Lane shop in 92121, on daily drivers, Tesla deliveries, and work trucks.

Coverage Tiers from Front Bumper to Full Body

  • Front bumper, $700 to $1,000, same day. The panel that absorbs most rock chip damage on a freeway commute, and the right entry point on a budget.
  • Front end package, $1,800 to $2,500, 1 to 2 days. Adds partial hood, fenders, and headlights. Common on a three to five year cycle.
  • Full front with mirrors and edges, $2,400 to $3,500, 1 to 2 days. Bumper, full hood, fenders, mirrors, A-pillars, and door cups. The tier most new-vehicle owners pick.
  • Full body, $5,500 to $8,500, 2 to 4 days. Every horizontal and vertical panel. The usual call on Porsche, AMG, Corvette, and limited-trim EVs.
  • PPF in San Diego gets quoted by coverage, not by car, and you can start at one tier and add panels later.

Self-Healing Urethane

Light swirl and wash marks reflow out of the top layer in heat. Deeper cuts do not, and we say so before you book rather than after.

Wrapped Edges Where Panels Allow

Bumper covers, headlights, and mirror caps come apart so the seam tucks behind the panel instead of sitting in the open collecting road grit.

Every Tier Published

Our PPF Installation Process

01

Coverage Consultation and Quote

Call (619) 357-6777 or send the quote form with your vehicle and how you drive it. We match a coverage tier to your mileage and route, from a $700 bumper to full body.

02

Decontamination and Paint Assessment

Wash, clay bar, and an IPA wipe-down before any film is cut. We walk the paint for chips and swirls first, because clear film locks in what sits under it.

03

Pattern Cut and Dry Fit

Templates cut to your exact trim, with radar housings, sensors, and camera cutouts accounted for. Panels come apart where wrapped edges are specced.

04

Film Application

Film laid panel by panel with slip solution, squeegeed out, edges tucked and set. A bumper finishes same day, front-end and full-front in 1 to 2 days, full-body 2 to 4.

05

Edge Walk-Through and Aftercare

We walk every seam and edge with you at pickup at 8580 Spectrum Lane in 92121, then cover the first 48 hours and the wash rules.

New-Vehicle Delivery Week

You just took delivery and the paint has never seen a freeway. This is the cleanest that car will ever be, which is why owners book paint protection film in San Diego during delivery week, not after the first chip.

Common scenarios: Tesla deliveries out of the Carlsbad and Encinitas showrooms, German performance cars with thin factory clear coats, new-to-market trims like Cybertruck and Rivian where touch-up paint is hard to source, and La Jolla buyers in 92037 keeping a car in factory paint.

High-Mileage Freeway Commuters

You are logging 25,000 miles a year and most of them happen on the I-15 or the 805. Front-end PPF in San Diego usually pays for itself by year two at that rate, because by year three an unprotected bumper reads as sandblasted from ten feet.

Common scenarios: 30 to 40 mile runs down the I-15 from Escondido, Poway, and the 92127 corridor, South Bay drivers on the 805 north to UTC, and trades running the 78 between Vista and San Marcos.

Coastal-Stored Vehicles

Vehicles that live outdoors near the water collect salt-laden marine air and blown sand, which micro-pits an unprotected nose over a few seasons. A clear bra in San Diego coastal zones is the practical defense, since repainting on a schedule is not.

Common scenarios: cars parked off La Jolla Shores in 92037, weekend cars on driveways in Del Mar and Solana Beach, daily drivers in coastal lots in Oceanside and Pacific Beach, and Carlsbad commuters parking a block from the sand.

Resale and Trade-Cycle Planning

Owners on a two to three year cycle are protecting residual value more than the car. PPF in the San Diego area covers the high-impact panels and peels off cleanly at the end. Reconditioning deductions for a chipped bumper are not negotiable at the appraisal desk.

Common scenarios: lease returns where wear-and-tear charges would otherwise apply, 36-month German trades, EV owners flipping to the next model year, and fleet vehicles being prepped for auction.

Warranty, Bundles, and Discounts

Every install here is backed by a 1-year workmanship warranty from our installers. If a panel lifts or an edge fails inside that window because of how it was prepped or applied, we redo it. Film material warranties are set by whichever brand goes on your car, so those terms are confirmed in writing at consultation.

Bundle pricing runs 10% off when a front-end package goes on with ceramic window tint, and 12% off for film plus tint plus chrome delete on one visit. Discounts run year-round for military, veterans, first responders, and returning customers. Mention it when you call (619) 357-6777.

Two names, one product

Clear bra and PPF are the same thing.

About half the people who call here say clear bra. The other half say PPF. Nobody is wrong, and there is no product difference between the two words.

The name goes back to the vinyl bras strapped over the nose of a car in the eighties and nineties. Those worked, sort of, until grit collected underneath and sanded the paint they were meant to protect. What replaced them is clear urethane bonded straight to the panel, with nothing behind it.

Ask for a clear bra in San Diego and you will be quoted paint protection film. You will also hear clear film and rock chip protection, all the same urethane.

The one place the words split is color PPF, protection film with pigment in it. That changes how the car looks. A clear bra does not, and is not supposed to.

What the road throws

The threat here is pavement, not sunshine.

Ask ten drivers what wrecks paint and most say sun. For film buyers it is whatever the vehicle ahead kicks up off the road.

The I-15 north of Miramar is the worst of it: truck-lane volume, months-long construction zones, and loose aggregate tracked onto open lanes. Same climbing the I-8 east out of Mission Valley, where gravel washes off the canyon shoulders after real rain.

The 805 and 5 merge north of the shop is its own problem. Nobody leaves room, so you spend it three car lengths off a bumper at 65. That is the geometry that chips a hood instead of a bumper.
  • Coast Highway and the beach lots: blown sand on damp pavement is a fine abrasive, and it works rockers and lower doors harder than the nose.
  • Desert weekends out the S-22 toward Anza-Borrego: decomposed granite, direct hits, and the leading edge of the hood takes them.

Paint protection film in San Diego gets specced off freeway miles and following distance, not neighborhood, which is why the conversation in 92121 starts with your commute. We film vehicles from across the county.

Straight answers

Four things this film will not do.

Worth knowing the limits before you spend $700, let alone $8,500.
  • It is not scratch-proof. Urethane resists abrasion far better than clear coat, but it will not ignore a key drag or a shopping cart corner. Those mark the film, which is the point: the film gets replaced, not the panel.
  • It is not a ceramic coating. Film stops impact. Coating changes how the surface sheds water and dirt. Neither replaces the other, and we do not install coatings. Severin Detailing handles that out of the same building.
  • It will not fix chips you already have. The film is clear, so an existing chip stays visible underneath and reads slightly larger through it. Chips get addressed first or they are locked in.
  • Self-healing has a narrow meaning. The top layer reflows with heat, so light swirl and wash marks vanish in afternoon sun. A puncture or a deep gouge is permanent. Self-healing is not self-repairing.

A fifth, less a limit than an expectation: go looking for the edges and you will find them. Wrapped edges hide the seam, cut edges leave it visible, and that choice is priced below.

Worth doing yourself?

Pre-cut kits off Amazon versus a shop install.

The real DIY competitor here is a pre-cut kit, not a roll of film. On the right panel they work fine. On the wrong one they cost you the kit and a Saturday.

Pre-cut kit

  • Genuinely fine on small, flat shapes: door cups, the strip behind the handles, a bumper top ledge.
  • Patterns are generic by year and model, so sensor cutouts and camera housings often miss on your trim.
  • Cut to the panel edge, so the seam sits in the open where road grit loads it. That is where lifting starts.
  • Alignment is one shot, stretch marks show wherever film was pulled over a curve, and driveway dust seals under it.

Roughly $80 to $250 for a bumper kit, plus your weekend.

Shop install

  • Patterns cut to your trim, with radar, parking sensors, and camera housings accounted for before anything touches paint.
  • Edges wrapped behind the panel where the body line allows, so dirt has nothing to grab.
  • Wash, clay, and an IPA wipe first, and bulk film so a hood goes on as one piece, not two.
  • Paint assessed before film is cut, plus a 1-year workmanship warranty no kit comes with.

$700 to $1,000 front bumper. $2,400 to $3,500 full front with mirrors and edges.

The spread

Why one quote reads $700 and the next reads $8,500.

Nothing else here carries a twelve-times price range, which is why PPF San Diego quotes look inconsistent from the outside. Four things decide where your vehicle lands.
Coverage area
The biggest lever. A front bumper is one panel. A full front adds hood, fenders, mirrors, A-pillars, and door cups. Full body means every surface, and square footage and labor hours scale together.
Panel complexity
A slab-sided truck bumper and a performance bumper with vents, radar housings, and a splitter are not the same job. Mirror caps and vented hoods add dry-fit time before a piece gets set.
Wrapped vs cut edges
The distinction most quotes never explain. A cut edge stops at the panel line: faster, cheaper, visible if you look. A wrapped edge tucks behind the panel, which usually means pulling the bumper cover, headlights, or mirror caps. Invisible seam, more labor, and the reason two quotes on the same coverage land hundreds apart.

One thing that is not a variable: the tier. What we publish is what we quote, and correction work is called out at the walk-through, not at pickup.

Paint Protection Film Pricing

Transparent pricing on every ppf tier. What you see online is the number we book at the appointment.

Direct Line(619) 357-6777

Pricing moves with vehicle size, panel complexity, and whether edges get wrapped or cut. Full-body film on exotic and oversized vehicles can exceed the published top tier, and paint correction is quoted separately. All of it is confirmed at the walk-through.

Living with it

How to wash a filmed car without lifting an edge.

The film is durable. The edges are the part you can damage yourself.

Give it two days before the first wash. Adhesive tacks fast but keeps setting, and a pressure washer aimed at a fresh seam will find it. After that, hand washing is most of the rule, since automatic tunnels with spinning brushes catch edges and mirror caps.

With a pressure washer, stay a foot back and cross the edges at an angle rather than holding the wand square on a seam. Bug guts and bird droppings are acidic and should come off within a day or two. Keep solvent-heavy tar removers off the seams, though. They soften adhesive faster than they clean.

Normal: faint edge lines, and water under a corner after a storm. Not normal: yellowing, a lifting corner that keeps returning, or a bubble that was not there at pickup. Call (619) 357-6777 before you pick at it. Edge lift is what the 1-year workmanship warranty covers.
